Most of this rain occurred during two major waves. The rest of the rain was light but lasted long enough to add nicely to the total. Perhaps this will have broken the dry spell since August 17th's rain and we will have additional rain to hydrate the trees and plants for the winter. |

After driving to Illinois and back this past weekend and seeing the drought south of us, I feel grateful that we received any rain at all last night even though it was only 0.18 inches! |

I was surprised to see only 0.86 in the rain gauge because it seemed that the rain was coming down in buckets! Is it possible that the strong wind was blowing the rain sideways and therefore it was not going into the gauge? |

It is difficult to know how much actually could have been in the gauge because some of the snow obviously went over the top. I would say it was at least 0.70, but I do not know exactly. Also, at 6 PM on Sunday I measured 10' new snow, plus the previous 3'" would bring the total to over a foot, but by morning the measurement was less. Anyway, I really am not into measuring snow. Usually the gauge measurement is closer than today." |

At the time of this entry (8:00PM) we now have over a foot of snow. Maybe I will get my white christmas afterall! We need precipitation so much that I will be happy even with snow. |

FYI We had (at our house) 1.08 inches rain in August and 0.17 inches so far in September. Things are dying from lack of water and the weather forecaster says 'what a wonderful sunny day it will be today (or this weekend)'". How clueless can these guys be!!!! " |

I wonder why the words 'for this storm'" appear at the bottom of this report. Most often our precipitation occurs in the form of showers or more than one '"storm'". Also there is just one place to list the beginning and the end of precipitation. Often we have a beginning and end where the sun comes out and then another beginning and end during the same 24 hour period...like which one am I supposed to list? Also, in the report that can be turned in for a period of several days the words '"when rain gauge was emptied'" appear when the words '"has fallen into the rain gauge'" could better be used, especially when most of the time the measurement is '"0'"." |

This is my report for Sunday the 6th. I did not know how to report two separate storms within 24 hours, so I could not fill in the times below. Here are the individual times and amounts. Saturday afternoon beginning around 2:30PM and ending around 5:00PM it rained around 0.75 inches. Sunday morning beginning at 2:30AM and ending at 7:30AM it rained another 1.63 inches or so. |

At 7:00 AM this morning the gauge read 0.26. We had two different intervals of heavy precip. One between 12 and 1 AM and one between 8 and 9 AM. What a treat to have no need to melt snow to get a reading! Also the ground has thawed, so there is no flooding. |

Because the ground was frozen, we have a pond in our front yard. Most of the precip. was rain and sleet. Hope this is a new trend for this spring...more rain, but after the ground thaws! |

The precipitation was mostly snow, but I did not measure it. I was able to sweep it off the sidewalk, so it could not have been much. I have decided not to bother measuring snow except to the nearest foot due to the fact that it blows around so much, making it impossible to get a measurement to a tenth of an inch!!! |
